Under 9 Sunday Orange Match Report
Killegland F.C. arrived from Ashbourne to take on the Portmarnock Under 9 Sunday Orange team.
A tense early few minutes during one game with very few chances meant Killegland led by a single goal,
approaching the end of the first half. A couple of smart passes meant Portmarnock equalised through Alex
Harris. Andrew Moore in goal made a string of saves to keep it tight until the break.
On the other pitch, Portmarnock built up a half time advantage with both Ben Flynn and Harry Gahan showing
some real composure in front of goal. James Gahan reminded the home side of how good a keeper he actually
is, with a fine display of shot-stopping skills.
In the second half, goals from Sam Flynn, Harry Gahan and Andrew Moore were all celebrated wildly with a
few dance moves thrown in for good measure. Jack Foley was an ever-reliable rock in defence and James
O’Brien’s energy and passing were a real bonus.
On the other pitch, both sides were going for it with the both defences having to work hard to keep the scores
down. Luke Moore was like a rock at the back, making numerous tackles that were keeping the home side in
front. Jamie O’Callaghan’s effortless display of passing ensured that Portmarnock dominate most of the second half.
As the second games kicked off, excellent determination and strength saw Alex Harris break through the
Killegland defence on several occasions, netting him a brace. Sam Keenan’s stunner from distance left the
keeper with no chance. Killegland pulled a few back and Sam Flynn never gave up running the show from his
defensive midfield position. The game was very entertaining and featured another heroic display from
Andrew Moore in goal.
On the other pitch, a fiercely contested battle commenced with Luke Moore having to dig deep to keep a lively
Killegland forward line at bay. Move of the match came when Jamie O'Callaghan picked the ball off the keeper,
drove to the half way and picked out James Gahan on the left. James, with a point to prove, drove down the left
and crossed into Ben Flynn, who finished with aplomb. A move which would bring a certain level of smugness
to the coaches, who had been working on that type of passing in training.
As the final whistle blew, the teams congratulated each other on a great afternoon of football, looking forward to
the return leg in Ashbourne.
