2/06/2018,DDSL u12 Cup Finals Weekend
It was a sunny evening in Abbotstown and Leicester Celtic were the opposition in the final of the Jean Kennedy Cup. Portmarnock were missing 2 players Charlie Aston and Alex Redmond, both highly instrumental in a thrilling semi-final win away to Drumcondra.
The pitch surface at FAI headquarters was immaculate and both teams responded to a well refereed and sporting occasion with some quality football. From the off, Alex Ganaza and John Hussey immediately started to dominate the game with strong tackling and an eagerness to test their keeper. Stephen Hudson in goal for Portmarnock capably dealt with any threat sent his way.
The first goal came from captain Hussey, who’s work on the wing was rewarded with a composed strike. Noah Reid came on and straight away his neat interplay with Rian Kennedy released Noah through on goal. Rian was immense up front and his prolific run of goals in the cup continued with a wonder strike to go three up.
Leicester Celtic defended well in the second half but Portmarnock were in control. Vocal support on the sideline from family, friends and club coaches reacted to great individual performances across the Porto team.
Rian Kennedy found the top corner with a delightful curler from the edge of the box .The ‘Drumnigh Three’ Tadhg Byrne, Andriy Collins and Cameron Forrester were popping up across the pitch breaking up any attacking chance and then quickly counter attacking with some slick passing.
Danny MacKeogh rock solid at the back pushed up front and got the fifth goal. Matthew Carr’s rasper struck the post and then both he and Noah Kenny were unfortunate to see well struck efforts brilliantly saved each time by the Leicester Celtic keeper. The final whistle arrived and Portmarnock were cup champions.
It was a great achievement and experience for the lads who were a credit to the club. John Hussey, captain for the day received the trophy from Mick Kennedy, DDSL Vice Chairman.
