Impressive win for the Portmarnock Over 35's
Portmarnock Over 35’s had a convincing 5:0 win in the LFA Cup to progress into the 3rd round.
Portmarnock AFC travelled down to Evergreen in Kilkenny to take on Castlewarren from the Carlow District league. Even with a 5pm kick off the temperatures were high making it difficult conditions to play in but perfect for the onlooking spectators.
Portmarnock came out of the traps flying putting the home side under relentless pressure with Alan Cawley, Robbie Stafford, Gary Dempsey and Cormac O’Leary coming close to opening the scoring.
With a half hour on the clock Alan Cawley got the scoring on the way for Portmarnock finishing off a well worked passage of play. Five minutes later Robbie Stafford made it two with a bursting run from midfield to get on the end of a through ball and calmly put it past the onrushing keep. Just before half time one foot was put into the next round of the cup with Alan Cawley making it three nil to Portmarnock and sending the lads in very happy at half time for a well earned water break!
Portmarnock didn’t let up and not long after the restart Cormac O’Leary made it four, putting the tie to bed. At this stage Portmarnock were in total dominance with the back 4 of Kenny Leahy, Gary Wells, Ciaran Brannigan and Paul Arkins shutting any sign of an attack out from the opposition.
Alan Cawley capped off an impressive display with his hatrick and Portmarnock’s 5th goal of the day following great work from Robbie Stafford in the build up.
An all round impressive display from Portmarnock who now advance to play Balbriggan away in the 3rd round Friday 20th July.
