New senior side off to a strong start . . .
Portmarnock AFC 4 - 2 VEC FC
The 2018/19 Season has started with a bang for PAFC's newest
Senior Side! Playing their first competitive game of the season
against an unbeaten and 2nd Place VEC FC was no easy entry to the
campaign, but the lads connected instantly and were 2-0 ahead in
the first 15 minutes. Conor Grehan opened the scoring with a well
placed free kick, before Paul O'Sullivan got on to the end of a smart
through ball and calmly doubled the score.
The second half started much the same, with both teams making
chances but not capitalising. As the game reached the 70th minute
it started to heat up. Andrew Dunne opened his PAFC account with
an OG after VEC FC floated a dangerous freekick into the penatly
area. Young winger Jack Beaddie restored the two goal lead after
a superb individual effort, beating three men before cooly beating
the keeper at his near post. Arthur Martinkevic had a chance to
make it 4, but was unable to capitalise after winning a penalty.
The last five minutes became very nervous as VEC FC dispatched a
20 yard free kick that was just out of reach of keeper Josh
Hoban. But the solid defensive partnership of Darragh Scanlon,
Eoin Shiels and James Hendriken held strong and battled bravely
until the end. Then commeth the hour, commeth the man, with only
a mintue or two left on the clock, Sean Daly approached a 25yrd
free kick straight down the middle. Never in doubt, the ball
sailed into the top corner and the game was won. But not before
Paddy Whyte made his well earned debut at 90mins+4.
Onwards and upwards for the lads, and we hope this encourages
more up to join Wednesday Night Training, 8pm. Paddy's Hill.
