The Saturday team made a victorious return to Paddy’s hill on Saturday beating a very experienced and organised Pegasus side.
Porto controlled the opening 25 mins of the game both centre halves Noel McGinnity & Rory Walsh being allowed carry the ball out of the back over long distances. Paul Scully with some excellent movement almost opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark but for some good work from the Pegasus keeper. Darren Daly also came close with some nice work from the right hand side. As the half went on Pegasus began to get a foothold however they never really looked like breaking down the much organised Porto back 4.
The second half started again with the parish on the front foot and 10 mins in Porto broke the deadlock. With a move that started in the left back position with Daragh Brennan who moved the ball into Dean Whelan in midfield and after some fantastic work from Whelan to switch the ball out to the right to Ian Bailey, Bailey then put a magnificent ball over which Simon Lenihan got on the end of to finish expertly from the left hand side – a really well worked move. Credit must go to Lenihan who has worked extremely hard to get back into the team, missing the last 2 months with a broken bone in his foot.
The Ports then doubled their lead 5 minutes later. Adam Moran who’s delivery all afternoon was exceptional put in a corner which caused chaos in the Pegasus box. Noel McGinnity did well to recycle the ball to Alex McWilliams who buried the ball into the Pegasus net. McWilliams who has showed maturity far beyond over the past few months registered his first ever senior goal.
Porto kept the pressure on and pushed for the 3rd however at times were wasteful in possession in the final third. Pegasus then pushed to try and get back in the game and did so with 5 mins to go after a break down the left hand side was finished well. The parishes keeper & skipper Dylan Fitzpatick also had to make 2 fantastic saves to retain the lead.
The management team reflected that although we made hard work of the last 15 minutes we were happy with the overall performance. It is the first time this season we have had the vast majority of our players available to us and considering alot of the players are still gelling together it speaks volumes to the lads themselves and their work ethic in training is really starting to show on the pitch.
We now look ahead to the visit of Drumcondra on Saturday the 23rd Nov where we will be looking to make it 3 wins on the bounce.
Starting 11: Dylan Fitzpatrick, Alex McWilliams, Noel McGinnity, Rory ‘Lurch’ Walsh, Daragh Brennan, Dean Whelan, Conor Walsh, Darren Daly, Ian Bailey, Adam Moran, Paul Scully
