Man of the Match - Darragh Curtin
Match report
When the team walked onto the Oscar Traynor Pitch, they were greeted with a roar from the stand, a great turnout of support from Portmarnock, which lifted the players and settled the nerves. The lads started very brightly, passing the ball well when we had it and battling like warriors when we needed to win it back. Full credit to Clontarf, who were equal to the task ahead and got a penalty after 10 minutes which was very well taken, beating goalkeeper Jack Quinn, who went on to have an excellent game.
What was most impressive was the calmness the lads showed in the face of going down 1-0, and kept passing and pressing. The lads were rewarded for their efforts with an excellent Ryan Gibson goal beating the Clontarf keeper to equalise on the 15 minute mark. Then lads took control of midfield with Alex McWilliams showing great composure on the ball and putting in some great tackles. Portmarnock kept pressing the ball from the front starting with Billy Iriwin who worked tirelessly all day and was unlucky not to score.
Clontarf held on and it was half time.
The second half started like the first and we could hardly believe when Clontarf went ahead with a stunning strike from their centre forward. But our central defence was outstanding along with our two fullbacks in Ryan Foley who passed the ball beautifully and defended when needed, and Andrew Graham whose running off the ball had Clontarf in sixes and sevens.
Clontarf had one hand on the cup but Darragh Curtin made sure it wasnt going to be easy with a superb strike from the corner to level things again. By now Eathan Maiti's silky skills was too much for Clontarf and hit the post and was unlucky not to score for all his hard work and exciting passages of play, with 15 minutes left it was all Portmarnock.
Joey Molloy took control of midfield and played some great one twos with Alex and Ryan. A couple of substitutions were made with Jamie Heary coming on who began terrifying their defence and Matthew Campbell who came on to shore up our defence and add to the flow of passing moves.
Substitute Josh Philips came on and gave added impetus and effort winning some great tackles to nulify their attacking threat.
A great move down the left from Darragh Curtin ended up hitting the post and straight after Ryan Gibson hitting the crossbar. It began to look as if it wasn't to be our day. (Full time 2-2)
Extra time started as we finished with Tom O' Sullivan and Jack Iriwin stalwarts as they were for us all season, started pressing even higher up the pitch which payed off with Ryan Gibson clinching the winner to the great delight of the tireless Portmarnock faithful.
Man of the Match Award goes to both Darragh Curtin and Eathan Maiti, who both ran their hearts out with style.
A special mention goes to Tom O' Sullivan who was flown by helicopter from Dublin Airport returning from his trip to the US.
Well done the lads
Roll on Next Season!!!
